We are delighted to be working with Maz at The Groomery”
Vaginal cytology is performed on female dogs to help determine the optimum time to breed and enhance the success of pregnancy.
Vaginal cytology is performed on female dogs during their estrus cycle (season) to help determine the optimum time to breed (mate) and enhance the success of pregnancy. The types of cells present in the vagina vary depending on the stage of estrus. (season) A swab is taken of the cells lining the vagina and analysed under a microscope. Usually more than one swab is required to determine the optimum time to breed.
Progesterone levels and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels are the best indicators of when ovulation will take place and when is the best time to breed (mate).
The technique is considerably useful when having to travel long distances to the stud dog or on bitches who have unexplainably missed on previous occasions. Slides are taken over a number of days with optimum results expected between day 9 and 14 of the bitch’s heat cycle, but in some cases on unsuccessful bitches in the past these days can vary.
Having used Vaginal Cytology on my own bitch and got the mating timed to perfection which produced a beautiful litter of 6 puppies, I now wouldn’t breed a litter of puppies without a vaginal cytology swab – I am delighted to say we can now offer this service to all, swabs can be taken by Sara or Jane at their premises, The Groomery or you can request a postal swab , a swab kit with instructions will be sent to you which you do yourself and send back to Canine FURtility on the same day. Swabs are ideally taken between day 8 and 14 of your bitches season, once the cytology swab has been analysed you will be contacted by phone with the results – a second swab maybe needed.
This service works hand in hand with our Small Animal Pregnancy diagnosis service and a discount is offered when both services are booked together.
